The NMC posted a draft Registered Medical Practitioners Regulation 2022, for comments from the public, experts, and stakeholders. However, this step caused a controversy, as the professional conduct did not include the word Charak or Hippocratic figure anywhere.

In response to the controversy, the NMC released another set of guidelines for competency-based medical education which included one sentence stating that modified Maharishi Charak Shapath is recommended to be introduced to medical education. However, there was no reference to the Hippocratic Oath. It was merely a recommendation within a set of guidelines. This was followed by the health minister stating that the NMC has not proposed the replacement of the Hippocratic Oath with Charak shapath.

The new pledge i.e., MCI ethics regulation of 2002 states that “will practice my profession with conscience and dignity” but the new one has added ‘and by good medical practice’. The new one has also modified another declaration stating that ‘I will maintain the utmost respect for human life.’
